Over the past 20 years, the Canadian government has established free trade agreements (FTAs) with several countries, including Colombia, Chile and Peru.

These agreements provide for the international mobility of professionals in specific sectors, such as :

  • mining
  • manufacturing industry
  • aeronautics
  • information technology
  • etc.

Generally speaking, these agreements offer considerable advantages, such as the elimination of the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) and, by the same token :

  • simplified administrative procedures
  • shorter processing times
  • lower costs
  • Exceptionally, FTAs have been spared the new restrictive measures of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). In concrete terms, this means :

  • the hiring of dozens of foreign workers without taking into account the number of current employees or the regional unemployment rate
  • make competitive wage offers with no low or high wage conditions
  • work permits lasting between 2 and 3 years
  • open work permits for spouses
  • etc.
